What's On with Merge NZ for NZSL Week 2021

NZSL Week is celebrated by New Zealanders each year in the first full week of May. This was established following the NZSL Act being recognised as an official language in 2006. 

Merge NZ is involved in the NZSL Week celebrations and you are invited to get involved too!

Games are a great way to learn! Why not organise a lunch time or afterwork team building activity using NZSL? We have downloadable resources for a fun Bingo Style Game using NZSL vocab for different topics:

A 3-week online NZSL crash course designed for teachers. You will learn school-related signs that will help you appreciate NZSL as one of three official languages. Starting Monday, 10th May for beginners and Thursday, 13th May for part 2 course. There are two different levels to suit your needs:

NZSL Club gathering

Meet up with other students at a local NZSL Club to practise NZSL skills and play interactive NZSL games. Meet new people, make new friends. The goal is to set up NZSL Club, which will continue once a month after NZSL Week in your home town:

  • Auckland

  • Hamilton

  • Tauranga

  • Wellington and

  • Christchurch

NZSL for Emergency Services

You will still have a class and a qualified NZSL tutor to teach you and it is fully interactive - just online!

 

3-week online crash course designed for Emergency Service staff. You will learn emergency-related signs that will help you communicate with your Deaf survivors/community members. 

You will receive handout/homework each week and certificate of attendance at the end of course.

NZSL for Health Professionals

This is a 3-week NZSL online crash course designed for Health Professionals. You will learn health-related signs that will help you communicate with your Deaf patients and clients who are using NZSL.

 

There are two different levels to suit your needs:

Full 8 weeks course

Want to commit and learn NZSL longer? Sign up for a 8 week course in your home area either in Auckland (North Shore or South Auckland), Hamilton, Tauranga, Papamoa, Marton or Christchurch. The course fee of $130 includes electronic handouts. If you cannot find any NZSL class in your area, join Merge NZ' MySign NZSL Online course for $130 for 8 weeks. There are different levels to suit your signing skills (from Beginners to Advanced levels).
