Introduction:

The first-ever New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) Camp for Deaf children was held from March 21st to 23rd at Sapphire Springs Holiday Park in Katikati, Bay of Plenty (BOP). This groundbreaking event brought together around 20 attendees, including 11 children, leaders, volunteers, and supporters. Organised to promote NZSL access and community engagement, the camp was proudly supported by Merge NZ.

A Life-Changing Experience:

The children who arrived at camp with little to no knowledge of NZSL left with newfound confidence and language skills. By the end of the weekend, they had mastered basic signs and were communicating effectively with each other. Parents were amazed at how much their children had learned in just a few days. One of the most memorable moments of the weekend was the Amazing Race, where teams navigated challenges using only NZSL - a true celebration of language and teamwork.

Creating a Safe and Inclusive Environment:

To ensure full inclusion, camp leaders communicated in both NZSL and spoken language, allowing all children to feel understood and connected. The camp created a safe space for Deaf children to use NZSL freely and proudly, helping them build a stronger sense of identity and belonging.

Inspiration and Empowerment:

Merge NZ director Victoria Lessing played a key role throughout the weekend, running a fun and engaging NZSL session and leading a workshop titled “What It Means to Be Deaf.” These sessions encouraged children to explore their identity, embrace their culture, and gain confidence in themselves and their language.

Looking Towards the Future:

Following the success of the camp, plans are already underway for a second camp in 2026. More volunteers will be needed to help expand the initiative, and efforts are being made to secure funding to support future events. Merge NZ is excited to continue its involvement in what has proven to be a life-changing opportunity for Deaf youth.

The Tauranga Deaf Society also extends a warm invitation to Deaf and hard of hearing children - especially those who may not yet be familiar with New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) - to join our growing community. Whether your child is just beginning their NZSL journey or looking to connect with others who share similar experiences, we welcome you to be part of our inclusive and supportive environment.

Get Involved:

If you're passionate about supporting Deaf and hard of hearing children and want to be part of this meaningful journey, we encourage you to get involved. Whether through volunteering, donating, or simply spreading the word, your support helps create a more inclusive future.

Tauranga Deaf Society:

This inspiring initiative would not have been possible without the dedication and vision of the Tauranga Deaf Society. Their camp sub-committee committed countless hours to organising and facilitating the weekend, with a clear goal of strengthening the Deaf community in the Bay of Plenty. With plans to make the camp an annual tradition, the Tauranga Deaf Society continues to lead efforts that empower Deaf children through language, connection, and culture.
