International Women’s Day 2026 Celebrating Deaf Women Leading the Way at Merge NZ

At Merge NZ, International Women’s Day is more than a date on the calendar - it is a reflection of who we are.

We are proud to be one of the largest Deaf-led organisations in Aotearoa New Zealand, with over 30 NZSL teachers across the country. The majority of our team are Deaf women. Our courses are taught by women, led by women, and administered by women.

This is not by design - it is by strength, commitment, and leadership.

Deaf Women at the Heart of NZSL Education

New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) is one of New Zealand’s official languages, and Deaf women have long played a critical role in preserving, teaching, and strengthening it.

At Merge NZ:

  • Our teachers are highly skilled Deaf professionals

  • Our leadership team is made up of Deaf women

  • Our administration and coordination are led by women

  • Our social enterprise model supports Deaf employment nationwide

Every class delivered, every learner supported, and every story shared contributes to language revitalisation and community empowerment.

Representation Matters

Deaf women face unique challenges - navigating both gender and disability barriers. Leadership opportunities have historically been limited.

At Merge NZ, we are changing that narrative.

We are proud that:

  • Deaf women are visible leaders

  • Deaf women are decision-makers

  • Deaf women are educators shaping future generations

Their lived experience is their expertise. Their leadership strengthens our organisation and the wider Deaf community.

Inclusion Remains Central

While our team is majority women, we warmly welcome Deaf men to join our social enterprise. It is naturally fewer men who teach NZSL across New Zealand, but their contribution is equally valued and essential.

Equity means celebrating women’s leadership while recognising that every Deaf educator - regardless of gender - plays an important role in strengthening NZSL and Deaf culture.

Looking Forward

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate:

  • Leadership

  • Resilience

  • Language

  • Community

  • Equity

We honour the Deaf women who lead, teach, mentor, and advocate every day - including those who have passed away, whose legacy continues to inspire and strengthen our community.

And we continue building an organisation where Deaf leadership thrives - and where opportunity remains open to all.

Happy International Women’s Day from all of us at Merge NZ.

Handwaves,

The Merge NZ Team
