Merge Expands Across the Tasman: Announcing the Launch of Merge AU in 2025!

Merge NZ is proud to announce a new Trans-Tasman venture, with the upcoming launch of Merge AU! In response to the need for Australian services that normalise Auslan, preparations are underway to open the Australian branch of Merge. We have received an Australian business number and appointed a new manager to oversee Merge AU’s launch.

We are proud to welcome Polly Aardt (Deaf) on board as the new Head of Australia Operations. Polly has two Master's Degrees, one in Special and Inclusive Education, and another in Leadership and Management in Education, making her the perfect candidate for this new role. She will be responsible for setting up Merge AU services in Auslan, starting in New South Wales with the goal of expanding to other Australian states in the future. We have already interviewed some Auslan teachers.

"This Trans-Tasman collaboration celebrates business opportunities led by Deaf leaders, showcasing the strength, talent, and innovation of Deaf leadership. With just a three-hour flight between us, we’re building stronger connections, sharing resources and knowledge, and creating pathways for growth, connection, and empowerment, providing the signing community with greater opportunities to thrive on both sides of the Tasman."  Victoria Lessing, Director Merge NZ

Polly will set up Merge AU’s courses in Australia - including online courses, face-to-face classes, and business workshops - as well as trialling new courses which could later be established in New Zealand.

This is the goal at the heart of Merge’s expansion in Australia - a mutually beneficial partnership that helps both branches of Merge grow and achieve our collective goals. Our growth into Australia will allow both countries to share resources, information, and knowledge. Together, our aim is to continue growing NZSL, Auslan, and Deaf awareness and create job opportunities for Deaf people in both countries.

We are planning to launch Merge AU in early 2025, and will share more details as they are confirmed.
