Merge NZ is now offering a new NZSL course focusing on water safety, thanks to a partnership with Global Swim. 'NZSL for Water Safety' is 3-week course designed to assist aquatic rescue team members and leaders of water-related activities in communicating effectively with the Deaf community.
This course will equip people working in the water safety field with relevant NZSL vocabulary and a deeper understanding of Deaf culture. The course covers topics like water safety basics, emergency signs, rescue techniques, and safety equipment. On completion, course participants will be better equipped to communicate in NZSL, improving water safety for the Deaf community.
Recently, we have released the first trial pilot course, which was delivered both online and onsite in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty. Participants reported that it was both an enjoyable and valuable experience.
The course would not have been possible without the support of Global Swim, whose aim is to improve justice, equity, diversity and inclusion within the realm of water safety. Global Swim’s partnership with Merge NZ proves their commitment to accessibility, enabling water safety leaders to effectively communicate in NZSL.
As Kurt from Global Swim says: "Similar to our relationship with water, working across cultural and linguistic diversity consistently requires humility, and is seldom something we can face alone. NZSL for Water Safety is about more than learning Sign Language. It is about encouraging greater connection with and recognition of our local Deaf community."
NZSL for Water Safety was successfully launched with a pilot programme in the Bay of Plenty, and Merge is accepting registrations and expressions of interest for upcoming courses. Register here: https://www.mergenz.co.nz/nzsl-water-safety
