About The Course
Learn NZSL (New Zealand Sign Language) conveniently online via MySign!
Experience interactive sessions led by a qualified NZSL teacher in a fully online setting! This 6-week crash course caters specifically to health professionals. Gain proficiency in health-related signs crucial for communicating with Deaf patients and clients. The course begins on Wednesday, May 15th.
This course is ideal for individuals with basic NZSL knowledge (around 5-10 hours of prior tuition) or those who have completed NZSL Health for Professionals part 1.
Dates: 15/5, 22/5, 29/5, 5/6, 12/6 and 19/6
Time: Wed, 6.30pm - 7.30pm

Course Outline for Health Professionals #2 & #3
Class One - Medical Conditions
- exchange greetings and ask about well-being
- learn days of week/clock time and making an appointment
- review numbers 1 – 20 and learn numbers 21 – 30
- Deaf culture - visual communication strategy
Class Two - Body functions
- describe basic functions of main body organs
- explain briefly about discomfort and pain-related experience
- learn numbers 31-40
- learn about months (calendar signs)
- name common health problems and different kinds of falls, accidents
- Deaf culture - literacy levels and health knowledge
Class Three - Scans and procedures
- describe and refer to common diagnostic tests and scans
- discuss about plans for recovery (treatment, surgery, etc)
- use of numbers for ranking
- review time concept in NZSL and talk about simple booking appointment time
- Deaf culture - how to work with an interpreter including informed consent
Class Four - In Emergency Department
- identify health related issues
- name of things in emergency department
- learn about actions in the emergency situation
- ask for some help (e.g. ask to bring, or change something, etc.)
- Deaf culture – Emergency 111 Text service
Class Five - Hospital Stay
- discuss about hospital stay
- make a basic request and offer help
- talk about hospital rules for visitors including families and friends
- learn numbers 41 – 100
- use of numbers for months
- Deaf culture – understanding about accessibility after visiting hours and auditory interruptions
Class Six - Support Services
- discuss about discharge plans
- communicate about observations/monitoring
- discuss about specialised services such as stroke, cancer, mental health (addiction), pregnancy/midwife
- Deaf culture – New Zealand Relay service
Important Notes:
- Registering online secures your place in the course. A minimum number of students is required; the course may be postponed or canceled if this threshold is not met. Please review our cancellation policy.
- Upon completing registration, you will receive a confirmation email with essential details, including the Zoom link to join the course. Check your spam folder if you don't receive the email.
- All you need is a computer/laptop with a webcam and internet connection. Please note that tablets and mobiles are not recommended for online learning.
- A Certificate of Attendance will be issued at the end of the course for those who attend at least 80% of the classes (5 out of 6).
