NZSL for Kiwi Kids Online - Part 1
Learn NZSL with other young learners! A 6-week introductory NZSL course. $79 for the full 6 weeks, this includes e-handouts/homework. A certificate of attendance will be provided at the end of course.

About The Course
Learn NZSL online with other young learners!
This introductory NZSL course is great for young people aged 7 - 11 years old with no prior knowledge. A 6 week course starting from Wednesday, 21st June.
Dates: 21/6, 28/6, 5/7, (12/7 - no class), 19/7, 26/7 and 2/8
Times: 4.30pm - 5.30pm
Level: NZSL Kiwi Kids - part 1
Fee: $79 per person incl. weekly e-homework/handouts and certificate of attendance (you must attend 4 classes to get a copy of certificate)
Learners will learn following topics:
Class 1 - Kia Ora
- give and ask personal information about self and others
- learn some fingerspelling alphabet, spell their own first letter name
- ask for clarification, correction and confirmation
- learn about conversation cultural behaviours (getting attention, maintaining eye-contact, pointing, etc.)
- learn numbers 1 - 10
Class 2 - Our People
- give and follow simple instructions and action commands
- practice fingerspelling alphabet
- learn greetings/review introductions
- understanding about languages and ethnicity (culture/races)
- tell about extended family/whanau and relationships
- review numbers (1 - 10) and learn numbers 11 - 20
Class 3 - Food & drinks
- name common food and drink items
- make and respond to requests and offers for basic wants and needs
- express likes and dislikes about food and drinks
- express negative statements using ‘none’ and ‘no’
- compare two different things and/or people
- learn numbers 21 - 30
Class 4 - Meal time
- name other food items and leisure drinks
- name essential kitchen items relevant for families (e.g. meals, dishes, cutlery)
- ask and tell where something is in the kitchen
- communicate about simple conversation during meal times
- use culturally appropriate phrases for leaving the dining table
Class 5 - Routines
- communicate about simple home and leisure activities
- ask and tell where someone is
- use appropriate phrases to open and hold conversations using ‘excuse me’, ‘wait’, ‘wait-a-minute’ and ‘hold’
- use calendar and clock time phrases
- use appropriate signs with varying tones and sentences
- tell numbers 31 – 40
Class 6 - Our Community
- name local community places (i.e. shop, supermarket, petrol station)
- share information about local community places
- talk about everyday transport
- ask and tell how to get to school, home and shop
- ask and tell where a household member is
You just need a computer or laptop and an internet connection and you have everything you need. Tablets or mobile phones are not recommended for online learning.
If there is a sibling or cousin, please email us so we can register manually ($10 per additional child). Please note that registering on the website confirms your place on the course and commits you to the course.
