About The Course
Learn NZSL (New Zealand Sign Language) online via MySign!
Join our online classes with a qualified NZSL teacher for a fully interactive learning experience. This course is suitable for students with no prior knowledge or experience in NZSL.
Duration: Every Monday from 16th September to 30th September

Course Outline for Water Safety
Class One - Personal Information
- exchange greetings and make introductions.
- identify people at the water-related scene (man/woman, adult/child, lifeguard, lifesaver, ambulance, doctor, police).
- ask for clarification, correction and confirmation.
- name water-related environment (i.e. beach, pool, river, lake, sea/ocean, etc.).
- learn the fingerspelling alphabet, spell their own name, and ask for repetition.
- Deaf culture – Getting Deaf person’s attention in an emergency and their communication preferences.
Class Two - Water Safety
- Overview of the importance of effective communication in water safety.
- Learn essential signs and phrases related to water safety, such as swim, water, safety, slip, trip/fall, help, life jacket, danger, and drown.
- Understand basic signs about water safety procedures.
- Practice water elements (wave, fast-flow, overflow, rip, etc.).
- Deaf culture – Importance of facial expression in emergencies.
Class Three - Water incident and rescue
- Learn signs related to 4 different environments: beach, pool, river/lake and sea/ocean.
- Understand basic tips on how to provide support to a victim in water.
- Learn numbers 1   – 10 and time in NZSL (referring to how long, minutes and hours).
- Discuss wellbeing and emotions (worried, lost, cold, injured, need help).
- Deaf culture – Telecommunication for Deaf people in emergencies.

- Registering online secures your place in the course. A minimum number of students is required; the course may be postponed or cancelled if this threshold is not met. Please review our cancellation policy.

- All you need is a computer or laptop with a webcam and internet connection. Please note that chromebooks, tablets, and mobiles are not recommended.
